Weekend Box Office: 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Swings to $70.8M in China Debut

The superhero title topped the foreign weekend chart, followed by a record-breaking $62 million international bow for horror pic ‘It.’

Spider-Man: Homecoming swung to big opening numbers in China, grossing $70.8 million to boast the third-biggest start for a Hollywood superhero tentpole.

Thanks to its late run in China, the Sony and Marvel Studios movie has now earned $495.3 million internationally for a global total of $822.8 million (the domestic portion is $327.7 million).

Marvel and Disney’s Avengers: Age of Ultron is the record-holder for biggest China opening with $115.8 million, followed by fellow Marvel/Disney title, Captain America: Civil War ($93.6 million).

Directed by Jon Watts and introducing Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man, Homecoming first opened in theaters in July and has successfully rebooted Sony’s marquee superhero franchise after the two Amazing Spider-Man films underwhelmed.

Spider-Man: Homecoming won the weekend internationally. The other big winner was New Line and Warner Bros.’ horror pic It, which debuted to $62 million from 46 foreign markets for a worldwide launch of $179.2 million. It, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel, scored the biggest global opening in history for a horror title.

Sony and Marvel are hopeful that Spider-Man: Homecoming will ultimately earn north of $100 million in China, although next week, it will face competition from War for the Planet of the Apes. China imposes a blackout period for Western films during the final weeks of summer; hence, movies including Spider-Man and Apes were delayed.

Imax theaters in China playing Spider-Man: Homecoming accounted for $6 million.
